SHIMLA: Former councilors of the Shimla Municipal Corporation have spearheaded a "Go Green" campaign in their bid to keep the capital city green and clean.
In a bid to supplement their efforts, they are calling for a community movement that transcends political party lines and boundaries.
They planted 45 majestic cedar trees in the picturesque Glen area.
Eager to ensure the city remains green and pristine, the councilors, including Satya Thakur, former Mayor, Dr. Kimmi Sood, Shelly Sharma, and others, joined hands with others to lead the charge during the Van Mahotsav festival, a time when tree survival rates are highest due to the rainy season.
The councilors were thrilled to witness the tremendous growth of the trees that were planted two years ago.
Motivated by this success, they expressed their commitment to running similar campaigns in the future, seeking citizens participation in Go Green campaign.
Their comprehensive approach includes not only tree planting but also promoting cleanliness, raising awareness, and encouraging eco-friendly lifestyles among the residents of Shimla, said Dr Kimmi.
By involving the community in these efforts, they aim to create a lasting impact on the city's environment.
In a gesture, the ex-councilors chose Shravan Shivratri, a sacred occasion, to launch the Go Green campaign, seeking blessings from Lord Shiva.
Their hope is that their green initiative will serve as both a success story and an inspiration for others to follow suit.
If such campaigns become regular with the support of the community, Shimla is poised to maintain its natural beauty and combat the encroachment of concrete on its landscape.
