SHIMLA/LEH:  In new high for star enthusiasts and adventure seekers, Hanle valley, nestled in the lofty Himalayas of Ladakh, is set to emerge as a top destination for astro-tourism. You don't need a SpaceX rocket to savor the wonders of the Dark Sky; instead, head to Hanle, where the Milky Way unfolds in all its glory.

Until recently, Hanle Valley remained off-limits to both local and foreign tourists, but that has changed dramatically with the recent approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

On September 14th of this year, the ministry granted permission for night stays in the Dark Sky Reserve, paving the way for a celestial experience like no other.

Hanle, perched at an altitude of 4500 meters, boasts the distinction of being India's first Dark Sky Reserve.

Visitors can indulge in awe-inspiring stargazing at the Indian Astronomical Observatory in the village. However, acquiring a permit is necessary to access the Tso Moriri or Chumur region of Hanle.

But that's not all. The Ministry of Home Affairs has also given its nod to open up the previously restricted Matsemic and Skow Valleys for tourism and trekking in Ladakh.

This move has generated immense enthusiasm among all stakeholders, including villagers and tour operators, as it promises to breathe new life into these remote valleys, located in the sensitive Indo-China border area.

The Tourism Department of the Union Territory of Ladakh had proposed the idea of allowing night stays for foreign tourists in Hanle, recognizing its potential as a premier astro-tourism destination.

The Wildlife Department of UT Ladakh had already designated Hanle as a Dark Sky Reserve. Given the exceptional experience of the Dark Sky, akin to floating in the open expanse of space, the LG of Ladakh sought permission from the Home Ministry for night stays.

Now, tourists can immerse themselves in the unique Dark Sky and astro-tourism offerings of Hanle, an experience unparalleled anywhere else on Earth.

After persistent efforts, the UT Administration successfully secured approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, marking a new high for Hanle.

The stargazers from across the globe are expected to flock to this celestial haven to witness India's Dark Sky Reserve.

What adds to the charm of Hanle is its world-renowned telescope, named after Nobel laureate Subramanyam Chandrasekhar.

This telescope has been a source of pride for India since its installation in 2000, making the Himalayan Chandra Telescope the highest infrared and optical observatory globally.

It features a two-meter diameter primary mirror, the heart of the telescope, mounted on a design that allows 360-degree azimuth movement and zero to 90-degree elevation. This versatility enables it to scan the entire sky.

The strategic placement of the Hanle Observatory is also noteworthy. Situated between observatories in the Canary Islands and eastern Australia, it offers a unique vantage point to observe phenomena missed by other observatories.

The dry climate of Hanle minimizes atmospheric moisture that can absorb infrared rays, making it one of the best observatories for infrared observations.

Hanle Valley's newfound status as an astro-tourism hotspot and Dark Sky Reserve promises a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers and space enthusiasts.

Don't miss the chance to embark on a Hanle stargazing night and witness the unforgettable spectacle of the Milky Way in all its splendour.
