New Delhi/Jhansi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested one Indian Revenue Service (Customs & Indirect Taxes) officer and two superintendents of the Central GST (CGST) department posted in Jhansi for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹70 lakh.
According to the CBI, the accused officials had sought the bribe from a private party in return for extending undue favours in an official matter related to the CGST department. Acting on a complaint, the agency laid a trap and caught the officials red-handed while accepting the illegal gratification.
The arrested IRS officer and the two superintendents were taken into custody following the recovery of the bribe amount. The CBI has registered a case under relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and is conducting further investigation to ascertain the full extent of the conspiracy and the involvement of other officials, if any.
Searches were also carried out at the premises linked to the accused, and further recoveries are expected, the agency said.
