Internl Tiger Day

SHIMLA: On International Tiger Day, we celebrate the magnificent tigers while raising awareness about their conservation.

India, home to over 70% of the world’s wild tigers, has made remarkable strides in tiger conservation, but challenges persist.

Tiger Population in India:

As of 2023, India boasts a tiger population of 3,167, marking a significant recovery from just 1,411 tigers in 2006.

The population has been growing at a healthy rate and Uttarakhand has witnessed over 314 per cent increase in its number since 2006, from  107 to 560 tigers in 2022.

Himachal Pradesh- Uttarakhand belt comprising,  mainly in Simbalbara and Rajaji and Kalesar  national park there are around 53 tigers reserves in India.

Subspecies of tigers are found abundantly in Great Himalayan, Pin valley national parks and many wild life sanctuary.

Even tiger has been spotted in evergreen Shilgrahan deodar Jungle of Chopal four years ago in October month by locals that had surprised them and wildlife officials have found tigers pugmarks around Simbalbara reserve in 2023.

The tigers travel vast territory and straddle borders with Himachal Pradesh  to find its own land, said wildlife lovers. The wild life watchers need to widen their net to study tigers movement into Himachal.

Conservation Efforts:

India’s Project Tiger, initiated in 1973, has played a pivotal role in this recovery.

The initiative has focused on habitat restoration, anti-poaching measures, and community engagement.

However, poaching and habitat fragmentation remain significant threats.

Ecological and Economic Impact:

Tigers are crucial for maintaining the ecological balance and promoting biodiversity.

Their presence also boosts eco-tourism, providing livelihoods for local communities.

As we celebrate International Tiger Day, it’s vital to continue our conservation efforts to ensure these majestic creatures thrive for generations to come.
