Leh: In a major boost to high-altitude floriculture and rural livelihoods, India's highest commercial Lilium cultivation field is rapidly taking shape at Choglamsar, on the banks of the River Sindhu in Leh, marking a new chapter in Ladakh's agricultural diversification.

More than 50,000 premium Lilium bulbs have already been planted across the flower field, with the first blooms expected in early September. Once fully established, the project will be handed over to local self-help groups (SHGs) and cooperatives for commercial cultivation and management.

The initiative aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities by promoting commercial floriculture in the cold desert region. During the initial phase, the administration will support SHGs and cooperatives in marketing the flowers while also providing scientific training and technical guidance to farmers. The objective is to enable them to independently manage commercial Lilium cultivation from next year onwards.

The project aligns with Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah's vision of "Sahkar Se Samriddhi" (Prosperity Through Cooperation) by strengthening cooperative-led economic development and creating new income avenues for farmers.

Known globally for their vibrant colours and premium market value, Lilium flowers are widely used in bouquets, floral decorations and the cut-flower industry. Officials believe Ladakh's unique high-altitude climate offers ideal conditions for producing high-quality blooms, helping position the Union Territory as an emerging high-altitude floriculture hub in India.

The initiative is expected to open new commercial opportunities for Ladakh's farming communities while showcasing the region's potential beyond traditional agriculture and horticulture.
