588 Pilgrims Rescued from Bharmour, Massive Air Operation Ends
Shimla, Sept 6 – The massive two-day rescue operation in Bharmour finally wrapped up on Saturday with 588 pilgrims airlifted to safety from the rain-hit Manimahesh Yatra route.
The Indian Air Force’s MI-17 helicopter carried out multiple sorties, including 64 in the final phase, ferrying stranded yatris to Chamba.
In a humanitarian gesture, the district administration arranged free HRTC buses to send rescued devotees to their respective destinations. Alongside the evacuees, two mortal remains were also airlifted.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu praised the relentless efforts of the district administration, NDRF, SDRF, police, home guards, NGOs and locals, saying, “The people of Chamba truly lived the spirit of Atithi Devo Bhava by organizing langars and extending selfless help to the stranded.”
The CM also commended Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, who personally trekked on foot from Chamba to Bharmour and camped there to oversee the rescue.
Sukhu said the gesture reflects his government’s humanitarian approach and sensitivity towards the safety of people.
This year’s yatra, marred by relentless rains and landslides, turned into one of the most challenging in recent memory, but the successful evacuation brought relief to hundreds of anxious families across Himachal and beyond.
