Shimla: The famous open-air ice-skating rink, Asia's only natural one, here is ready to welcome enthusiasts from today!
After months of waiting, the rink is set for a thrilling season, luring locals, tourists, and sports buffs from across the country and abroad.
The Shimla Ice-Skating Club, which oversees this historic gem, confirmed that the ice has been laid, and skaters are free to take to the rink.
The excitement is palpable as the city gears up for a frosty blend of sport, skill, and nostalgia.
But this isn’t just a winter wonderland; it's a slice of history.
Established in 1920, the rink has been a cornerstone of Shimla’s charm, a spot where British officers once glided under the Himalayan sun.
For over a century, it has remained a beloved haunt for generations of locals and visitors alike.
Back then, freezing water from a nearby stream was painstakingly sprayed to create the ice sheet—a technique that still survives, making it unique in the world of artificial rinks.
Through the decades, Shimla’s rink has produced national and international ice-skaters, carving careers and memories.
"This year, we are looking at a fantastic four-month season," shared Sandy, a member of the ice-skating club. "It’s not just a sport; it’s a way to feel Shimla’s soul."
Rajat Malhotra, Organising Secretary Shimla Ice Skating Club said that today, on December 8, 2024, we have conducted a successful ice skating trial here, the ice is good and from tomorrow we will be able to give regular sessions, if the weather is good and the weather remains the same, then the chances of the ice getting better and a very good ice skating season.
For amateurs, it’s a fun way to soak in the winter vibes.
For serious athletes, it’s a launchpad to championships, including the Olympics. The rink’s frozen legacy continues to inspire, inviting all to lace up and join the glide.
Shimla’s ice rink isn’t just a patch of ice—it’s a stage where the past meets the future, and every winter skater is a part of its timeless story.
