Shimla: Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced major initiatives to tackle drug abuse and improve maternal and child health during a state-level workshop.
A State Advisory Board for De-addiction and Rehabilitation, chaired by the CM, will streamline efforts across departments.
The Centre of Excellence for Mental Health at Tanda was designated as the nodal institution for de-addiction. Opioid Substitution Therapy Centres will be set up in all medical colleges and district hospitals.
Dr. V.K. Paul, Member of NITI Aayog, stressed the importance of immediate and exclusive breastfeeding, saying, “Breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and exclusive breastfeeding for six months are critical for child health.”
He highlighted the role of ASHA and Anganwadi workers in guiding parents on proper nutrition and zinc supplementation during diarrhea.
Experts from AIIMS and PGI focused on parental awareness.
They stated, “Families must prioritize nutritious meals for infants once they reach six months. Regular health monitoring of mothers and children is essential to prevent deficiencies and ensure growth.”
A state-of-the-art de-addiction centre will be established in Kotla Barog, Sirmaur. The CM also highlighted efforts to crack down on drug mafias, including property confiscation.
The workshop saw participation from leading health experts, who deliberated on nutrition and substance abuse challenges in the state.
