SHIMLA: As Himachal Pradesh gears up for the upcoming polls to elect four Lok Sabha MPs and six state assembly members on June 1, stringent measures are being implemented to curb electoral malpractices, particularly bribery.

The Election Commission of India's directives, as per Sections 171B and 171C of the Indian Penal Code, are being rigorously enforced across the state.

These sections stipulate severe penalties, including imprisonment and fines, for individuals found guilty of giving or receiving bribes during the electoral process.

To ensure compliance, Flying Squads have been established in each assembly constituency, tasked with registering cases against those involved in bribery activities. Despite these measures, concerns linger regarding the effectiveness of such directives in deterring candidates and parties from resorting to unethical tactics to secure votes.

In an effort to promote transparency and accountability, citizens are urged to refrain from engaging in bribery practices. Additionally, individuals carrying significant amounts of cash or goods are advised to possess relevant documentation to substantiate their possessions.

However, the ground reality raises questions about the extent to which these directives are being adhered to by candidates and political parties vying for electoral victory.

The allure of power and the high stakes involved in elections often tempt individuals to resort to corrupt practices, undermining the integrity of the electoral process.

In light of these challenges, the establishment of District Level Monitoring Cells, equipped with a 24x7 Toll-Free Number (1950), serves as a vital avenue for reporting instances of bribery.

Yet, the effectiveness of such mechanisms hinges on the willingness of citizens to come forward and report violations.

Chief Election Commissioner of India Rajiv Kumar has asserted that the ECI is here to conduct free and  fair elections ensuring both quantity, more voting percentage  and quality.

As the election date draws near, the spotlight remains on the ethical conduct of candidates and the efficacy of regulatory measures in safeguarding the democratic principles of fair and free elections in Himachal Pradesh.
