Fresh Snowfall Disrupts Traffic in Himachal, But Still No  Respite from Drought-Like Conditions

Shimla: A fresh spell of snowfall brought temporary relief to parts of Himachal Pradesh but fell short of expectations, failing to ease the ongoing dry spell in the state. While roads in higher reaches like Narkanda, Kufri, Deha-Khirki-Charki, Chopal, and Manali-Keylong remained disrupted due to snow  Shimla city had  clear skies, much to the disappointment of residents hoping for a snowy spectacle.

Traffic movement came to a temporary hakt on few  routes, including the Shimla-Kufri Narkanda highway and the Manali-Atal Tunnel-Keylong-Jispa stretch. At the Atal Tunnel’s North Portal, a thin sheet of ice formed on the road, making conditions treacherous, especially for 4×2 vehicles. Authorities have urged travelers to avoid unnecessary journeys and exercise caution while driving.

In Lahaul, light snowfall was reported in Udaipur, while Jispa witnessed fresh snow accumulation. Officials have issued advisories, warning against non-essential travel.

Despite this recent snowfall, the situation remains grim. Compared to last year, snow accumulation is significantly lower.

For instance, Choorhdhar mountain (11,900 ft) in Chopal had recorded over 25 feet of snow in 2024, but this season, it has barely crossed 6 feet. Experts believe this could have serious implications for water availability in the coming months.

While higher altitudes received some snowfall, the absence of snow in lower reaches, including Shimla, has left residents and tourists disappointed. With clear skies over the capital city, the much-awaited winter charm seems to be fading, adding to concerns over the state’s worsening dry conditions.
