SHIMLA:  In an effort to enhance road safety and curb accidents, Himachal Pradesh police and state transport department  came on board today to chalk out a comprehensive strategy to minimize road accidents and fatalities across Himachal Pradesh. The idea is to promote a culture of safe and secure driving on the Hilly roads in Himachal and in the country as whole.

During the meeting, officials delved into various aspects of the plan, underscoring a need for collaboration between law enforcement agencies, police, and transport authorities to save lives on the roads.

They highlighted the recent deployment of new equipment aimed at ensuring strict adherence to traffic regulations on the key state highways in the state.

One key initiative discussed was the adoption of the Good Samaritans scheme, which has been directed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

This scheme aims to provide immediate assistance to accident victims, enabling them to receive urgent medical attention and transport to hospitals within a critical "golden hour."

To oversee the successful execution of the scheme, state authorities will establish committees at both the district and state levels.

These committees, chaired by senior officials including the Principal Secretary of Home Affairs, Commissioner of Health, and other key members, will conduct quarterly reviews to ensure the scheme's proper implementation.

The officials emphasized the importance of identifying good Samaritans - volunteers who selflessly aid injured individuals at accident sites and accompany them to hospitals for prompt treatment.

They sought to recognize and appreciate the efforts of these Samaritans, who have played a vital role in reducing accident-related fatalities by acting swiftly.ī

Principal Secretary of Transport, RD  Nazeem, and Director General of Police, Sanjay Kundu and director transport Anupam Kashyap and other officials shared data  showcasing a decline in accident cases in 2023.

They attributed this positive trend to the effective cooperation and close coordination between the police and transport departments.

The officials underscored the significance of public support and active public  cooperation in adhering to road safety rules. This collaborative approach aims to not only reduce accidents but also save lives across the state.

As Himachal Pradesh takes determined steps toward enhancing road safety, these measures hold the potential to make a meaningful difference in safeguarding lives on the roads.

As recommended by the IIT Madras wing working on Road Safety in India, Himachal also needs to work on training of the truck and bus drivers to reduce fatalities.
To what extent these meetings will help replicate on the ground zero to promote a "culture of safe and secure driving on the hilly roads and in the country as a whole", only time will tell.
