Shimla: From the ski slopes of Narkanda to the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla, Pune, Devika Kainthla is making waves across the nation.
This young Pahari girl has scripted history by securing Rank 1 among women candidates in the NDA and 29th All India Rank among 641 candidates.
Devika is the only woman from Himachal Pradesh to join the NDA this year.
On December 26, 2024, Devika will take her first steps into the 153rd NDA (Women) Course, armed with determination, dreams, and a desire to serve the nation.
In an exclusive chat with Kuldeep Chauhan, Editor-in-Chief, Himbumail here, Devika opened up about her journey, inspirations, and vision for the future.
“Dr. Seema Rao is my role model,” says Devika.
“When I think of resilience and dedication, I think of Dr. Seema Rao, India’s first woman commando trainer.
She’s shown how women can break stereotypes and lead from the front. I aspire to bring the same grit to my journey in the Indian Army,” Devika shares, her voice firm and resolute.
The Spark That Ignited Her Dream
“The dream of joining the armed forces was born in my heart when I was just a child. Over the years, it became an earnest goal. I owe this achievement to my parents, my sister, my teachers, my state, and my friends who supported me every step of the way.”
Devika’s academic and extracurricular achievements back her resolve.
She scored a phenomenal 97.8% in her 10th board exams at Convent of Jesus and Marry, Shimla and topped Himachal Pradesh with 98.2% in 12th CBSE enrolled at DAV New Shimla.
A topper in every sense, she was also awarded by the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu at a function of the popular vernacular in Shimla for her academic excellence.
After 12th, Devika pursued Economics (Honours) at Miranda House, Delhi University, and excelled as an NCC cadet, debater, and public speaker.
Breaking Barriers: “Army is my first and last choice.”
Despite having a wide range of career options, Devika is clear about her priorities.
“Being an Indian Army officer is not just a profession—it’s my purpose. Breaking barriers of gender and serving my nation is what I aspire to do.”
When asked about the challenges of the army, including the possibility of facing enemies, she responds with clarity. “Peace is paramount. But individuals disturbing peace and harmony have no place in a civilised world.”
“Learning is a lifelong process,” she adds.
Devika believes in balancing education with her military career. “I am an avid reader and want to continue learning alongside serving in the army. Knowledge and discipline go hand in hand.”
Her aspirations don’t stop here. “I want to major in the Corps of Military Intelligence. There’s a divine force that guides us through crises, and I intend to trust it while giving my best effort.”
A Proud Family and State
Devika hails from Narkanda, Shimla, a picturesque town known for its ski resorts.
Her father, Advocate D.P. Kainthla, and her mother, a homemaker, are thrilled with her achievement. Her younger sister, a 7th-standard student at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla, looks up to her as an inspiration.
“She has made us and Himachal proud,” says her father. Her teachers and friends echo this sentiment, celebrating her as a role model for the state’s youth.
Words of Gratitude and Commitment
“I promise to be one of the finest officers, giving my best to my country and its people,” Devika says, her voice brimming with determination. “This is not just my dream; it’s a collective pride for Himachal.”
With her sparkling academic record, fiery speeches at debates, and sense of serving the nation, Devika has already proven herself.
