SHIMLA: The hill city here s buzzing with preparations as the festive season approaches. The Christmas and New Year bash are expected to bring a massive influx of tourists to the Queen of Hills.
Northern Railways has announced a special holiday gift for travelers. A narrow-gauge reserved holiday special train service will operate on the UNESCO-listed Kalka-Shimla heritage track that will carry over125 passengers.
Train No. 52443 (Kalka to Shimla) and Train No. 52444 (Shimla to Kalka) will run from December 20, 2024, to February 28, 2025.
Divisional Railway Manager (Ambala), Gera, confirmed that these trains are being introduced to accommodate the rising number of bookings.
The heritage railway, known for its winding routes and scenic views, is a major draw for holidaymakers.
Shimla gets a festive makeover
The Mall and The Ridge, two iconic landmarks of Shimla, are being spruced up to welcome visitors and locals.
Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan said the municipal teams are working tirelessly to enhance the charm of the town.
The Shimla Winter Carnival is set to kick off on Christmas Eve.
This annual event has grown into a major crowd-puller, attracting tourists from across the country.
The carnival promises vibrant cultural programs, Himachali cuisines, traditional attires, and energetic performances by singing and dancing troupes.
The Shimla Municipal Corporation and District Administration are collaborating to ensure the success of the carnival. They are deploying additional manpower and resources to create a colorful and festive atmosphere.
Tourism hotspots gear up
Tourists are also expected to flock to nearby hotspots like Mashobra, Taradpur, Naldehra, Narkanda, Kufri, Fagu, and Theog. These destinations are gearing up with improved facilities to welcome revellers.
Local hoteliers are optimistic about the season. Over 50% of rooms are already booked for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“We’re expecting an excellent winter season if Shimla gets snowfall around this time,” said a local hotelier.
