The CBI on Saturday arrested Lieutenant Colonel Deepak Kumar Sharma, posted as Diplomatic Planning Officer in the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, in a bribery and criminal conspiracy case, officials said.

According to the CBI, the officer was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹3 lakh on December 18, acting on reliable source information.

The bribe was allegedly delivered by Vinod Kumar on behalf of a private company linked to defence production and exports, including overseas interests.

The agency alleged that Lt Col Sharma is a habitual offender, indulging in corrupt and illegal activities, and was conspiring with representatives of private companies to promote their interests in defence manufacturing and export matters in exchange for illegal gratification.

The CBI further said that Rajeev Yadav and Ravjeet Singh, associated with a Bangalore-based firm, were managing operations of the accused company and were in regular contact with Lt Col Sharma, pursuing favours through illegal means from various government departments and ministries.

During searches conducted at Delhi, Sri Ganganagar (Rajasthan), Bengaluru and Jammu, the CBI recovered ₹3 lakh bribe money from the officer’s Delhi residence.

In addition, cash worth ₹2.36 crore was seized from his premises, including  ₹10 Lakh bribe  amount recovered from his house, the agency said.

Several incriminating documents and digital material were also seized. Searches at the accused officer’s Delhi residence were continuing late into the evening, officials added.

The CBI said the case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and Prevention of Corruption Act, and further investigation is underway.
