The Himachal Pradesh State Election Commission on Tuesday sounded the poll bugle for four Municipal corporations, 51 urban local bodies, announcing that elections will be held on May 17, with the Model Code of Conduct coming into immediate effect across all Municipal Corporations, Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats.
Addressing the media, State Election Commissioner Anil Khachi said that Municipal Corporations of Solan, Mandi, Palampur and Dharamshala will also go to polls on the same day.
The nomination process will begin on April 29 and 30, while candidates can withdraw their nominations by May 6. Counting of votes will take place on May 31, and results will be declared the same day.
Khachi said that elections to Panchayati Raj institutions will be held later, keeping the schedule open for now.
Meanwhile, suspense continues over Panchayati Raj polls in Himachal Pradesh, as a petition is pending before the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The case is expected to be taken up in the first week of May, and its outcome could shape the rural election timeline.
With urban elections now formally announced, political activity is set to pick up pace across the state, even as stakeholders await clarity on the Panchayati Raj polls.
