CHAMOLI — High above the roaring Alaknanda river, a routine pilgrimage flight turned into a high-altitude death trap this afternoon when a private helicopter carrying five pilgrims and its pilot vanished into a wall of mountain fog before smashing into a sheer cliffside near Joshimath. None on board survived.

The ill-fated aircraft—a Trans Bharat Aviation chopper bearing call sign VT-HCX—lifted off from the sacred shrine town of Badrinath at 1:14 PM during a fleeting window of clear skies. Within minutes of entering the treacherous, narrow gorge heading south, the Himalayas closed in.

Bound for the Sahastradhara Heliport in Dehradun, Captain Himanshu was navigating the notoriously volatile air currents of the Char Dham corridor when freezing rain, dense cloud cover, and sudden upper-ridge snowfall blinded the valley.

By 1:22 PM, as the chopper threaded the needle through the Pandukeshwar gorge, visibility dropped to near zero. Eight minutes later, the cockpit went dead.

At 1:30 PM, air traffic controllers lost both radar transponder signals and radio contact as the aircraft banked near the towering crags of Hathi Parvat (also known locally as Haathi Parvat. For nearly an hour, the chopper appeared to have dissolved into thin air, triggering panic across state aviation rooms.

"We were unable to trace the helicopter's location once it entered the Joshimath valley vicinity," said Prateek Jain, Chief Executive Officer of the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), who immediately ordered the grounding of Trans Bharat Aviation’s entire fleet while scrambling emergency units.

The breakthrough came not from radar screens, but from the sharp eyes of Indian Army troops stationed along the frontier ridges. Soldiers reported spotting a dark plume of smoke rising from the jagged slopes behind the mountain peak, just above Chai village near the JP Power House and Marwari Bridge.

Alerted by aerial reconnaissance inputs from the Indian Air Force (IAF) and a 2:21 PM distress pin from the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate near the Army camp, a multi-force strike team swung into action.

Braves from the Indian Army, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and district police launched a grueling vertical trek up the rain-slicked mountain face from both Joshimath and Pandukeshwar.

When vanguard rescuers finally breached the mist-shrouded impact zone, they were met with scenes of total devastation. The rotorcraft had shattered against the rocky gradient.

Chamoli Superintendent of Police Surjit Singh Panwar confirmed from the ground that all six occupants were pulled from the mangled fuselage, dead on impact. Alongside Captain Himanshu, the victims have been identified as passengers Prathapa, Arun, Shankar Gowda, Sudheer K, and H.S. Natraja.

As night falls over the Chamoli district, teams are battling sub-zero gusts to bring the bodies down from the ridge, leaving harsh questions hanging in the thin mountain air over flight clearances in the unforgiving Himalayan corridor.

THE ANATOMY OF A HIMALAYAN CRASH: MINUTE-BY-MINUTE

1:14 PM | The Launch: Chopper VT-HCX clears the helipad at Badrinath (10,800+ ft) with 6 souls on board, banking south into the Alaknanda river valley.

1:22 PM | The Weather Trap: Passing over the Pandukeshwar corridor, sudden sheets of rain and rolling Himalayan clouds swallow the flight path.

 * 1:30 PM | Radar Blackout: Radio and transponder signals flatline behind the Hathi Parvat ridge. Army jawans on the ground spot smoke billowing near the Marwari Bridge slope.

2:20 PM | The Scramble: Following IAF aerial recon inputs and an SDM signal trace near the Chai village Army camp, joint Army, SDRF, and ITBP units scale the cliffside.

Late Afternoon | Grim Recovery: Rescuers reach the smoking wreckage above the JP Power House; all five pilgrims and the pilot are confirmed dead, and UCADA grounds the operator's entire fleet.
