Vimal Negi death probe: CBI digs into HPPCL corruption, SC keeps interim relief, Desh Raj’s new posting sparks row
SHIMLA/NEW DELHI, Aug 23 : The CBI’s investigation into the suspicious death of senior HPPCL engineer Vimal Negi is now circling around alleged irregularities in the Pekhubela solar project and the Shongtong Karcham hydro project.
The matter came up in the Supreme Court on Saturday in Desh Raj vs State of Himachal Pradesh.
The agency pleaded for more time to put its findings on record.
The bench, while granting what it called the “final indulgence,” ordered that the existing interim relief will continue and fixed September 25, 2025, as the next date of hearing.
Negi, who vanished from his Shimla office in March, was later found dead in Gobind Sagar Lake — a case that immediately raised doubts of pressure, harassment, and cover-ups inside the power corporation.
His family has consistently alleged that he was being forced to sign off on shady clearances linked to multi-crore projects.
Adding fuel to the fire of family and engineering fraternity is that Desh Raj, one of the officials named in complaints, has now been elevated as Chief Engineer in HPSEBL by the state government.
This move has drawn sharp protest from employee unions and engineers’ bodies, who see it as a blatant disregard for accountability while the CBI probe is still unfolding.
With the corruption trail tightening and fresh administrative decisions stoking unrest, the mystery behind Negi’s death remains far from closure — leaving both his family and colleagues still waiting for justice.
