New Delhi/Guwahati, June 13: In a landmark development for the Northeast, the Government of India, the governments of Assam and Nagaland have signed a historic tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), bringing an end to a decades-long dispute and paving the way for oil and gas exploration in the region.

The agreement is being hailed as a major breakthrough in resolving inter-state differences through dialogue and cooperation, while unlocking the vast energy potential of the Northeast. Officials described the pact as a significant step towards strengthening national energy security and accelerating economic development in the region.

The MoU is expected to facilitate exploration and development of hydrocarbon resources in areas that had remained inaccessible due to the long-pending dispute. The move is likely to attract fresh investments, generate employment opportunities and boost infrastructure development across the two states.

Leaders associated with the agreement said the understanding reflects the spirit of cooperative federalism and demonstrates how states can work together to resolve complex issues in the larger national interest. They termed it a shining example of India's unity and consensus-driven governance.

The agreement is also being viewed as a step towards realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of an energy-independent India, with the Northeast expected to play an increasingly important role in the country's energy landscape.

Observers noted that the settlement sends a positive message across the country, showing that long-standing disputes can be resolved through dialogue, mutual trust and political will. The pact is expected to strengthen relations between Assam and Nagaland while creating new opportunities for growth and development in the strategically important Northeast region.

Calling it a proud moment for the Northeast, stakeholders said the agreement underlines the principle that progress becomes possible when states choose cooperation over confrontation. With the dispute resolved, attention will now shift towards harnessing the region's natural resources and translating the agreement into tangible benefits for local communities.

The MoU marks yet another milestone in the Centre's efforts to promote peace, stability and economic development in the Northeast, a region increasingly emerging as a key pillar of India's growth story.
