NEW DELHI: In a major move to protect young doctors from exploitation, the United Doctors’ Forum (UDF) has released a Residency Awareness Guide ahead of the new academic session for postgraduate medical courses at top institutions like AIIMS Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, and JIPMER.

UDF President Dr. Lakshya Mittal, while unveiling the guide, said, “No one has the right to violate the fundamental protections granted to our young doctors under Articles 21 and 42 of the Constitution in the name of rigorous training.

Only doctors who are physically and mentally healthy can provide safe and quality patient care.”

The five-page guide is aimed at informing medical students and their parents about the existing rules governing residency training, including duty hours, leave entitlements, and the redressal mechanisms under the Uniform Residency Scheme and PGMER 2023 guidelines. It also highlights common instances of misuse and abuse in medical institutions.

Dr. Mittal warned that institutions forcing resident doctors to work beyond prescribed hours, denying leave, or engaging in bullying would face serious consequences.

“UDF stands firmly with the medical fraternity against all forms of exploitation and is committed to breaking the toxic culture still prevalent in some institutions,” he said.

The forum had earlier played a key role in securing a favorable Supreme Court verdict in the NEET PG single-shift case and ensured leave provisions for residents in Haryana, thanks to the persistent efforts of Dr. Amit Vyas.

With this new guide, UDF hopes to usher in a more transparent and humane residency culture across India’s premier medical institutions.
