A Series of Cloudbursts in Upper Kinnaur, Rampur has led to FlashFloods in Satluj,  Shimla Remains powerless for more than 8 hours and Waterless ; Villagers Along Satluj Asked to Vacate as River  Swell

RAMPUR/SHIMLA /LEH:

Shimla was plunged into power outage on Wednesday_Thursday night after a series of cloudbursts in Pooh, Shrikhand Mahadev, Ganvi and Kasha Path, along with heavy rains lashing Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur, triggered a chain of disasters — shutting down major power projects, cutting off water supply, and forcing evacuation warnings for low-lying areas along the Satluj.

High silt levels in the Satluj river brought SJVN’s Rampur and NJPC projects, as well as HPSEB plants, to a grinding halt, leaving the state capital without electricity for nearly 8  hours.

With no power, pumping from Giri, Guma and Satluj water sources stopped completely, sparking a severe water shortage in the city.

Power was restored in Shimla Thursday's morning at 9 am after 8 hours.

In Ganvi, the SJVN Luhri project site was inundated, while sirens blared along the Satluj, Beas and Chenab rivers in Lahaul to warn of rising water levels.

In Khaltunalah in Kotkhai, several shops  and vehicles were inundated due to flash flood in the nallah.

Authorities have directed residents of low-lying villages along the Satluj to vacate immediately, fearing flash floods and further surges.

In Tattapani, the Satluj water flooded the Laxmi Narayan temple and river level continued to increase.

The disaster’s impact wasn’t limited to Himachal.

In Ladakh, flash floods washed away portions of the Kargil–Leh highway after swollen tributaries went on a rampage, cutting off key connectivity.Cloudbursts Wreak Havoc in Upper Shimla; Ganvi Bridge Collapses, Villages Cut Off

Traffic has been diverted to the Patsari–Kharapatthar road after tralla overturned at Dochi in Jubbal blocking the Road and hitting apple transportation.

Reports said the bus stand,  two sheds have been washed away, while six others remain flooded and at risk of collapse in Ghanvi.

One house faces imminent danger, and three houses have been buried under silt. The local police chowki is also in the danger zone as water levels remain high.

In a major blow, the motorable bridge of Ganvi Hydroelectric Project (HEP) of HPSEBL collapsed, snapping connectivity to Ganvi, Kiao, Koot, Kinfi, Kutru, Suru, Roopni, Khanidhar, and Kheuncha villages.

These habitations, spread across three gram panchayats — Ganvi, Kiao and Koot — now remain completely cut off.

Adding to the crisis, SJPNL could pump just 38 million litres of water by around 10 PM on Wednesday, far below normal supply levels, and morning updates on the situation are awaited.

Officials said restoration of power and water in Shimla will take time as river flows remain dangerously high and weather conditions continue to pose a threat.

Rescue teams have been kept on high alert along vulnerable riverbanks.
