Heavy Showers Likely in Parts of Himachal in Next 3 Hours

Shimla, August 14 — The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has predicted light to moderate rain at many places and heavy rain at isolated pockets in Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Una districts over the next three hours.

IMD said  an upper air cyclonic circulation persists over Himachal Pradesh and adjoining Jammu between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level.

Heavy rain over the past 24 hours has thrown life out of gear in Himachal Pradesh, with the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reporting 395 roads blocked, including NH-305 at Jhed (Khanag) in Kullu, and 1,593 distribution transformers (DTRs) disrupted.

As many as 178 water supply schemes are also out of service.

Mandi tops the list with 173 roads blocked, followed by Kullu (70), Shimla (47), Chamba (27), Sirmour (31), Kangra (25), Lahaul-Spiti (8), and Solan (6). Bilaspur and Hamirpur saw minimal road disruptions, while Kinnaur reported none.

The power sector has been hit hardest in Shimla (278 DTRs down), Sirmour (659), Solan (315), Lahaul-Spiti (150), and Hamirpur (102). Water supply schemes have been badly affected in Shimla (36), Lahaul-Spiti (7), Solan (5), and Kullu (none), with several reports from Sirmour still awaited.

Officials say most disruptions are due to landslides, flash floods, HT line breakdowns, and falling trees, and restoration work is on in war-footing mode.

As per today’s 8:30 AM data, rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours (in mm) is as follows:

Shimla 69.0, Sundernagar 19.5, Bhuntar 4.0, Kalpa 2.2, Dharamshala 10.8, Una 85.4, Nahan 33.3, Keylong 1.0, Palampur 13.0, Solan 81.4, Manali 25.0, Kangra 12.5, Mandi 13.4, Bilaspur 30.8, Chamba 2.0, Dalhousie NA, Jubberhatti 65.2, Kufri 66.0, Kukumseri 18.2, Narakanda 39.5, Barmaur 15.0, Reckong Peo 2.5, Seobagh 1.0, Dhaulakuan 58.0, Berthin 32.6, Samdho NA, Kasauli 62.0, Paonta Sahib 49.0, Sarahan 29.0, Dehra Gopipur 24.3, Tabo 0.0, Mashobra NA, Neri 31.5, Sainj NA, Bajaura 7.5.

However, the IMD has no rainfall data for some of the worst-affected spots — Pooh, Kashapath, Shrikhand Mahadev, Gushaini in Kullu, and Mayar Valley in Lahaul-Spiti — where cloudbursts have wreaked havoc in the past 24 hours, triggering flash floods in local nallahs and rivers.

Keylong was the coldest in the state with a minimum temperature of 13.5°C, while Neri recorded the highest maximum temperature at 33.9°C.

The Met department has urged residents, especially in rain-prone districts, to remain cautious as heavy downpours may lead to localised flooding, landslides, and traffic disruptions.
