Dehradun Rains Expose Crumbling Infrastructure: Bridges Collapse, Roads Flood, Residents Suffer
Dehradun: Torrential rains lashed the city on Monday night, tearing apart bridges, flooding colonies, and once again exposing the sorry state of urban planning and road safety in Uttarakhand’s capital.
On the Dehradun–Paonta highway, a section of the bridge near Premnagar Nanda Chowki collapsed, throwing traffic out of gear. Authorities scrambled to divert vehicles—those heading from Dehradun to Vikasnagar were rerouted via Panditwari–Rangadwala, while vehicles coming towards Dehradun were diverted through Sighnawala.
The Dehradun–Haridwar National Highway too caved in, with part of a bridge near Seema Dental College at Lal Tappad severely damaged. Traffic had to be diverted through Bhaniyawala and Nepali Farm, choking alternate routes.
In residential areas like Manduwala and Paundha, rainwater mixed with debris gushed straight into homes and hostels, trapping residents. Rescue teams from Fire Service Selakui and SDRF rushed in and managed to evacuate children and locals to safer places.
Every spell of heavy rain turns Dehradun into a disaster zone—bridges snapping, roads sinking, and neighborhoods drowning in muck.
The question that stares the authorities in the face: How long will poor planning, faulty drainage, and weak infrastructure keep endangering lives in a city that claims to be the “gateway to the hills”?
