Shimla | The mother of Dr Raghav Narula, a senior resident at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC), Shimla, has strongly condemned Himachal Pradesh Health Minister Col Dhani Ram Shandil for referring to her son as a “gonda”, calling the remark highly irresponsible and unbecoming of a health minister.
In a video statement released on Wednesday, Dr Narula’s mother said the family was deeply pained by the minister’s comment, which, she alleged, was made without ascertaining the facts that led to the December 22 doctor-patient scuffle at IGMC.
“No parent would want to hear such words being used for their child by a health minister. Our son worked hard, studied for years, and earned his place in a premier medical institution. Such statements are extremely hurtful and disappointing,” she said.
She questioned how a senior minister could pass such sweeping remarks even before the inquiry process had concluded. “Instead of ensuring a fair probe, the health minister chose to label a young doctor. This shows a complete lack of sensitivity towards the medical fraternity,” she added.
Dr Narula’s family reiterated that he had been discharging his duties sincerely and had reacted under threat during the incident. They also expressed anguish over what they termed a “trial by statements” against their son, even as investigations into the matter are still underway.
The controversy erupted after Dr Narula was terminated from service following a clash with a patient and his attendants at IGMC. The incident triggered protests by resident doctors, who have demanded a balanced inquiry, protection for doctors on duty, and action against those who allegedly threatened the senior resident.
The minister’s remark has further escalated tensions, with doctors’ associations and now the doctor’s family questioning the government’s approach and its handling of violence against healthcare workers.
