New Delhi/ Shimla: In recent Rajya Sabha session, BJP MP Harsh Mahajan from Himachal raised the alarm over the ongoing devastation in Himachal Pradesh, pointing out that extreme weather events due to climate change have wreaked havoc on the state. He has sought Centra's constant support for Himachal.
"The situation in Himachal is dire. Flash floods and landslides have caused damage worth thousands of crores to infrastructure and property. Roads have been washed away, and dams have overflowed," Mahajan said.
He highlighted the heavy toll on human life, noting, "Last year, we lost about 400 people".
"This year, 55 lives have already been lost, and 50 people are still missing. Entire communities have been displaced, and livelihoods shattered."
Mahajan thanked the central government for its swift response last year, which included ₹1,800 crores under NDRF and SDRF, 11,000 houses for the displaced, ₹2,700 crores under PMGSY, and ₹3,500 crores from NHAI for road repairs.
He also acknowledged the Finance Minister’s focus on Himachal for infrastructure development including Railways in this year’s budget.
However, he stressed the need for sustainable development, urging, "All dams must undergo regular safety checks, and we need scientific solutions for muck dumping".
"Road construction by the NHAI must be redesigned with the unique mountain terrain in mind", Mahajan said.
Mahajan has sought the continued government support to help Himachal recover from this ongoing crisis.
