Shimla, February 27, 2025: After a prolonged dry spell, parts of Himachal Pradesh finally received much-needed rain and snowfall, bringing relief to farmers and orchardists.

However, snowfall has largely eluded the prime apple belt of Shimla district, including high spots of Khirki, Kharapathar, and Sungri, as temperatures failed to dip low enough to trigger snowfall.

In stark contrast, on March 10, 2010, the same higher  apple belt had witnessed nearly three feet of snow, which played a crucial role in replenishing soil moisture and ensuring a healthy apple crop.

Western Disturbance Triggers Precipitation

The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, reported that a Western Disturbance has led to precipitation across the state, with another fresh system expected to impact Northwest India from March 2.

Rain and snow are forecast in isolated and widespread areas over the next few days, with heavy snowfall likely in high-altitude regions.

According to recorded data at 8:30 AM on February 27, 2025:

Keylong received 20 cm of snow, the highest in the state.

Kalpa recorded 3.4 cm of snowfall.

Sarahan saw 29.1 mm of rain, while Seobagh received 22.2 mm.

Manali witnessed 19 mm of rain, while Bhuntar recorded 10.8 mm.

Other parts of the state, including Dharamshala (6 mm), Chamba (8 mm), and Mandi (5 mm), also saw significant rainfall, helping improve soil moisture levels for crops.

A Boon for Apple Orchards and Rabi Crops

While snowfall has been less than expected in the apple belt, the widespread rain will help improve soil moisture, benefiting apple trees in their dormant phase.

This is especially crucial as apple orchards require adequate chilling hours for a good bloom in spring.

The rainfall also comes as a blessing for rabi crops like wheat and mustard, which were struggling due to dry conditions in districts like Una, Kangra, and Hamirpur.

More Snow Expected in March

With another Western Disturbance approaching from March 2, the state could receive more rain and snow in the coming days, further improving water availability for crops and boosting overall agricultural prospects.

For now, the precipitation has provided much-needed relief from the dry spell, reducing fears of drought and raising hopes for a good apple season and a strong rabi crop yield.
