Himachal Farmers to Launch Statewide Protest Over Land Acquisition Issues
Mandi, August 18, 2024: The Himachal Kisan Sabha has decided to intensify its agitation across the state over land acquisition issues.
At a one-day convention held in Mandi, state president Dr. Kuldeep Singh Tanwar emphasized that large-scale land acquisitions are taking place in Himachal Pradesh, but affected farmers are not receiving fair compensation. "It's time for farmers and affected communities to unite.
The 2013 Land Acquisition Act is not being implemented in the state. We demand compensation, rehabilitation, and resettlement under this law," he said.
Kushal Bhardwaj pointed out that land is being acquired for various projects like highways, railways, hydel projects, and industries.
"But, the sad truth is that the laws aren't being followed. Compensation under Factor 2 is not being provided, nor are other provisions being implemented. Issues like rehabilitation, service roads, footpaths, and environmental damage are being ignored," he stated.
Wrapping up the convention, Dr. Onkar Shad highlighted that significant achievements have always been made through organized struggle.
"Land issues have always been central to farmers' movements across the country. The struggles for land ceiling and tenancy laws in Himachal were successful only because of united efforts," he remarked.
He also pointed out how the previous BJP government cleverly reduced land circle rates, allowing land to be grabbed at throwaway prices.
The convention concluded with a resolution to hold similar meetings across districts, launch a signature campaign, and start local protests.
Protests are planned for September 16, 17, and 18 at SDM and Tehsil offices in Nirth, Kotgarh, and Rampur over the demands of those affected by the Sunni Hydel Project.
Farmers from Mandi, Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Sirmaur, and Solan attended the convention, with representatives from various regions sharing their experiences and concerns.
