Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s recent visit to Tikkar village in Chopal has landed him in a fresh controversy.
During the government’s “Gaon Ki Dehleez Par Sarkar” program, a wild chicken served at a dinner has sparked a political storm.
Former CM Jairam Thakur quipped, “Those mocking our Jan Manch program are now picnicking in villages instead of solving people’s issues. The public is watching everything.”
BJP spokesperson and social media head Chetan Bragta called out CM Sukhu, saying, “Wild chicken is a protected species under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and the 2022 amendment. Hunting or consuming it is a punishable offense.”
Bragta claimed the official dinner menu listed “wild chicken”, and a viral video clearly shows the CM encouraging his ministers and officials to partake in the feast.
He added, “This is not just illegal but morally reprehensible. Himachal, a devbhoomi, respects wildlife, but this government is openly flouting laws.”
Legal Implications
Under Schedule 1, species are categorized as highly endangered, and hunting or consuming them carries a penalty of 3-7 years imprisonment.
Bragta questioned, “Is this Congress’ idea of ‘governance reform’? Violating laws meant to protect endangered species while mocking Himachal’s cultural values?”
BJP Demands Apology, Action
The BJP has demanded a public apology from CM Sukhu and strict action against those involved. Bragta said, “The people of Himachal won’t tolerate such blatant disregard for wildlife laws. The CM must apologize and take action against the culprits.”
The “Gaon Ki Dehleez Par Sarkar” initiative was already under BJP’s criticism, and this incident has given the opposition more ammunition.
Former CM Jairam Thakur said, “Instead of addressing public grievances, this program has turned into a government picnic.”
The CM or CMO has not issued a statement yet.
