LEH/SHIMLA: On the eighth day of the Climate Fast unto Death led by Sonam Wangchuk in Leh, the momentum continues to swell as an increasing number of Ladakhis join the movement.
What began with a humble gathering of 300 individuals on the first day has now surged to over 1500 participants, drawing support from various organizations and political factions.
Addressing the growing crowd, Sonam Wangchuk expressed gratitude for the overwhelming solidarity and highlighted the dismay shared by many over environmental degradation and government inaction.
He underscored the urgency of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate intervention to safeguard Ladakh's delicate ecosystem and preserve its unique cultural heritage.
Responding to frequent questions raised about the proposed inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule, Wangchuk clarified that the provision does not aim to halt industrial development but rather seeks to empower local tribal councils to make informed decisions regarding sustainable development in their regions.
He stressed the importance of community involvement in shaping policies that prioritize the well-being of indigenous tribes and promote environmentally responsible practices.
Wangchuk also addressed concerns about land acquisition outside Ladakh, advocating for the protection of fragile areas while encouraging economic growth in less vulnerable regions through designated economic zones.
He cautioned against unchecked development that could jeopardize Ladakh's natural beauty and cultural integrity.
The various speakers joined hands with Wangchuk's call to action, pledging continued support for the cause and urging others to amplify their voices in advocating for meaningful change.
