Shimla, July 11: Patients seeking advanced diagnostic services at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities (AIMSS), Chamiyana, will now benefit from a state-of-the-art 3-Tesla MRI facility inaugurated by Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Saturday.

The installation makes AIMSS the second government hospital in Himachal Pradesh, after IGMC Shimla, to offer the latest-generation MRI technology.

Installed at a cost of around ₹23 crore, the new MRI machine provides sharper imaging, faster scans and improved diagnostic accuracy, enabling doctors to detect and treat complex medical conditions more effectively. The facility will also spare patients from travelling to other hospitals for MRI investigations, reducing both waiting time and treatment costs.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the state government is committed to providing affordable, modern and quality healthcare to people across Himachal Pradesh.

He said healthcare and education remain the government's top priorities, adding that there is no shortage of funds for strengthening these sectors.

Sukhu said the government is upgrading medical infrastructure in consultation with doctors and is filling vacant posts while equipping government medical colleges with advanced diagnostic technology. He added that competitive pay scales are also being offered to attract and retain specialist doctors.

The Chief Minister said the outdated 19-year-old MRI machine at IGMC Shimla has already been replaced with a new 3-Tesla MRI system and similar advanced machines will be installed in other government medical colleges in the coming years.

He also announced that the state government will invest ₹125 crore to establish automated laboratories in government medical colleges, improving the speed and accuracy of diagnostic tests.

Highlighting healthcare reforms, Sukhu said AIMSS Chamiyana has already introduced robotic surgery services, which have now been expanded to Tanda Medical College, IGMC Shimla and Ner Chowk Medical College.

These procedures are being provided at subsidised rates, making advanced treatment accessible to patients who otherwise could not afford private healthcare.

The Chief Minister also reviewed the functioning of AIMSS and announced that work on the Chamiyana approach road has begun, while e-bus services will be introduced to improve connectivity. He said the number of Senior Resident seats at the institute will be increased, 800 nursing posts are being filled and 200 Associate Professors will be appointed by December 2026.

During the programme, Sukhu also launched the AIMSS mobile application, enabling patients to access information about hospital services, and introduced a cleanliness monitoring system to improve hygiene standards across the institute.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. (Col.) Dhani Ram Shandil, MLA Harish Janartha, Shimla Mayor Surinder Chauhan and senior health officials were present at the inauguration.
