Divyang students in HPU Shimla

Shimla, 28 November 2025:

HPU’s Divyang Students Get AI-Powered Study Boost Under RUSA Equity Initiative

Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has taken a major step towards inclusive education by equipping over 104 Divyang students with advanced AI-powered learning toolkits, giving a fresh push to their academics through modern information technology.

A special need-assessment board headed by Dean Students’ Welfare Prof. Mamta Mokta and Nodal Officer (Disability) Prof. Dhirender Sharma held detailed deliberations with Divyang students and experts to understand their specific requirements.

On the basis of this assessment, the university upgraded its facilities under the RUSA Equity Initiative, with the Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahaveer Singh directing that the “best possible support” be ensured for all Divyang students.

A state-of-the-art computer lab—designated exclusively for Divyang learners—was inaugurated on 28 November.

The lab has been upgraded with high-speed internet, uninterrupted power supply, and 13 fully equipped systems to help students access online lectures and e-resources without interruption.

Under RUSA funding, the university has procured several high-end assistive technologies, including Kibo-2, Daisy Player EVOE-11, NVDA software, and Saarthi AI smart assistance tools. Smart canes have also been purchased to assist visually impaired students in mobility.

A special day-long training programme was conducted to familiarise the students with these tools, enabling them to make maximum use of the new technology in their academic and research pursuits.

Students expressed excitement and confidence after using the upgraded devices and software.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Mamta Mokta, who led the need assessment exercise, said:

“These AI-assisted learning tools have given our Divyang students a new push in their studies.

Their enthusiasm shows how technology can be a powerful equaliser. Our team is committed to ensuring they get the finest facilities.”

Nodal Officer (Disability) Prof. Dhirender Sharma, along with library in-charge Dr. Mahendra Thakur, played a key role in setting up the Hi-Tech lab.

Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Mahaveer Singh motivated the students and assured continued support:

“HPU will keep expanding facilities for Divyang students. This is not just an initiative—it is our responsibility.”

Dean Planning & Teaching Matters, Prof. Dhiman, who facilitated financial approvals, said that RUSA funds are being effectively used to strengthen inclusive infrastructure across the university.

With upgraded assistive technologies and institutional commitment, HPU’s Divyang students are set to experience a more accessible, empowered, and technology-driven learning environment.
