Pangongmararhon

Leh: At a place where even breathing is a test of endurance, human willpower triumphed over ice, wind and altitude.

The 4th edition of the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon 2026 unfolded on the glassy expanse of Pangong Tso, turning the world’s highest frozen lake into a theatre of raw courage and adventure. Held at a staggering altitude of around 14,000 feet, the event pushed the limits of human endurance in sub-zero temperatures and oxygen-starved air.

More than 450 runners braved the harsh Ladakh winter, battling biting winds, frozen terrain and dizzying heights across categories ranging from 5 km to the full 42 km marathon. Each stride on the ice was a fight against nature itself — a rare feat even by global endurance standards.

The marathon was proudly supported by the Fire and Fury Corps, whose presence underscored the deep bond between the Indian Army and extreme adventure sports in Ladakh. The event stood as a powerful symbol of resilience, discipline and teamwork forged in one of the toughest terrains on Earth.

Stealing the spotlight were the personnel of the Ladakh Scouts, who delivered an outstanding performance across all major categories.

In the 10 km race, Agniveer Mehboob Ali clinched first place, followed by Naik Rinchen Gurmet and Lance Naik Jigmat Stobdan.

The half marathon (21 km) saw Rifleman Tsetan Namgial emerge victorious, with Agniveer Tashi Namgyal and Agniveer Sarfaraz Hussain securing second and third positions respectively.

The ultimate test — the full marathon (42 km) on ice — was conquered by Naik Tsering Nurboo, while Agniveer Tsering Stobgais and Rifleman Kadim Hussain completed the podium.

Adding to the celebration, “Top Gun” runners from the Forever in Operations Division were also appreciated for their collective excellence in the 5 km and 10 km events, highlighting the depth of endurance training within the force.

Senior leadership, including the GOC of Fire and Fury Corps, congratulated all ranks for their exceptional grit and determination. The support extended by the Trishul Division further reinforced the Army’s commitment to promoting winter sports and adventure activities in the high Himalayas.

More than a race, the Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon has evolved into a statement — that at dizzying heights and freezing temperatures, the human spirit, when disciplined and determined, can still outrun the elements.
