Army Adopts Geothermal Energy in Harsh Kumaon Terrain, COAS Lauds Innovation

In a step towards Sustainable Defence, the Indian Army has turned to geothermal energy and underground storage systems to brave the harsh Kumaon winters.
During his visit to the Panchshul Brigade at Pithoragarh and forward areas in the Kumaon region, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi reviewed the operational preparedness and celebrated Diwali with the troops stationed in the high-altitude terrain.
COAS gesture comes as a major morale booster for the troops in High-altitude Himalaya.
General Dwivedi was briefed on the formation’s operational readiness, technology infusion, integration with other security agencies, and the various nation-building initiatives being undertaken in the region.
Appreciating the troops’ efforts, the Army Chief commended the adoption of geothermal energy solutions and other green initiatives that have made the formation self-reliant and eco-sustainable in region where everything freezes.
The innovative use of underground storage for water and fuel has further ensured uninterrupted logistics during severe winters when access routes often remain cut off.
Interacting with the officers and soldiers, General Dwivedi praised their professionalism, discipline, and readiness to operate in such challenging conditions.
He lauded their dedication and exceptional state of preparedness in defending the nation’s borders in one of the toughest terrains.
The visit reflected the Army’s ongoing focus on technology absorption and environmental sustainability, aligning with its broader vision for a Decade of Transformation.
