Lahaul-Spiti Breathes the Cleanest Air in India — Tourists Flock to the Himalayan Heaven
Keylong/Udaipur, October 23 – Himachal Pradesh’s scenic Lahaul-Spiti district has emerged as the cleanest air zone in the country, according to the latest air quality data released on Wednesday. The district recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of just 38, placing it in the ‘Good’ category — completely safe for human health.
Experts attribute this pristine air quality to low population density, minimal vehicular traffic, absence of industries, high altitude, and cold climatic conditions. “There are no major factories or traffic jams here. The icy winds and snow-covered peaks act as natural air purifiers,” said an environmental scientist.
According to the state’s Environment Department, PM2.5 levels in Lahaul-Spiti remain below 6 micrograms per cubic meter, compared to over 100 in many plains cities.
In stark contrast, Delhi’s air quality has plunged into the ‘severe’ category with AQI crossing 400 post-Diwali, choking residents. Kullu recorded an AQI of 122, while Chandigarh stood at 165 — both falling under the ‘unhealthy’ range.
Locals say the district’s fresh, crisp air and tranquil surroundings are drawing an increasing number of visitors. “Once you breathe the air of Lahaul, you forget the suffocating city pollution,” said a Keylong resident Sudarshan Jaspa, a social activist.
Environmental experts have warned that with tourism on the rise, sustainable waste management and pollution control will be crucial to maintain Lahaul-Spiti’s status as India’s clean air paradise.
