Leh/Shimla/New Delhi: The popular climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk is likely to be released soon, with sources indicating that the government has  revoked his detention after he spent more than five  months in Jodhpur jail since September 26, 2025.

The revocation comes soon after the Centre Shifted LG of Ladakh UT Kavinder Gupta as Governor of Himachal. He was replaced by N Ravi as new  LG.

According to officials familiar with the development, the move to withdraw the detention order has come from the Home Ministry, and formalities for his release could be completed shortly.

Wangchuk’s detention had drawn widespread attention from environmental groups, civil society organisations and supporters across the country who had been demanding his release.

The Ladakh-based innovator and environmental campaigner had been raising concerns about ecological protection and sustainable development in the fragile Himalayan region.

Various NGOs have joined hand to pressurize the Centre to Revoke his preventive detention. The plea for his release is pending in the Supreme Court.

His detention had triggered debate over environmental activism and democratic rights, particularly in the context of climate advocacy in mountain states.

Sources said the decision to revoke the detention comes after sustained public pressure and discussions within the government.

Wangchuk is expected to walk free after more than  five  months in jail.

Supporters of the activist have welcomed the development, saying his release would allow him to continue his campaign for climate justice and protection of the Himalayan ecosystem.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday, the decision was taken after due consideration as part of efforts to restore peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh and to facilitate constructive dialogue with stakeholders in the region.

Wangchuk had been detained on September 26, 2025, following a law and order situation that arose in the peaceful town of Leh on September 24.

The detention order was issued by the District Magistrate of Leh under the NSA to maintain public order. Officials said the activist had already completed nearly half of the detention period prescribed under the Act.

The government said it has been engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people.

However, it noted that the continuing bandhs and protests had begun affecting the region’s social and economic life.

According to the statement, the disruptions had impacted students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators and tourists, besides affecting the overall economy of the region.

“In furtherance of fostering an environment of peace and meaningful dialogue, the Government has decided to revoke the detention of  Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect,” the Home Ministry said.

The Centre reiterated its commitment to ensuring necessary safeguards for Ladakh and expressed hope that issues concerning the region would be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue.

It said discussions would continue through the High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms set up to address regional concerns.
