Himachal: 4.33 Lakh Revenue Cases Settled, But Questions Remain on Systemic Reforms
Shimla, Sept 26 – The Himachal Pradesh government is thumping its chest over resolving 4.33 lakh pending revenue cases through Lok Adalats in less than two years.
CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu claims the initiative has brought "good governance" to people’s doorsteps, saving them repeated rounds of Tehsil offices.
Since October 2023, Revenue Lok Adalats held at Tehsil and Sub-Tehsil levels cleared 3.6 lakh mutations, 22,592 partitions, 39,835 demarcations and 10,710 corrections in records.
The government has been running these Adalats on the last two days of every month in “mission mode.”
While officials are hailing the drive as a big success, critics point out that the real test lies in ensuring such pendency doesn’t pile up again.
For decades, revenue cases have dragged on for years, creating harassment and breeding corruption.
Simply clearing the backlog without deep reforms in land records, digitisation, and accountability mechanisms could mean history will repeat itself.
The government insists it is committed to transparency and efficiency, but for the common man, the real relief will come only when justice is not delayed in the first place.
