Chennai, May 4: Early counting trends for the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu have thrown up a stunning political twist, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) racing ahead and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam lagging behind.
According to data released by the Election Commission of India at 11:15 AM, TVK is leading in 105 seats in the 234-member Assembly, putting it firmly in the driver’s seat.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is ahead in 66 constituencies, while the DMK has managed to lead in just 40 seats so far.
Other parties trail significantly, with the Pattali Makkal Katchi leading in 7 seats, the Indian National Congress in 4, and the Bharatiya Janata Party in 3 seats.
The biggest takeaway from the early trends is the apparent setback for Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, whose party seems to be struggling against an unexpected surge by TVK, led by actor-turned-politician Vijay.
Election officials have cautioned that these figures are provisional and based on inputs from counting centres, with final results to be declared after completion of all rounds and verification through statutory forms.
However, if the trend sustains, Tamil Nadu could be headed for a major political realignment, with a new player challenging the long-standing dominance of Dravidian parties in the state.
