Global Medical Watchdog Moved Against NMC Over ‘Dilution’ of Standards

New Delhi, August 22 – The United Doctors Front (UDF) has urged  the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) to suspend National Medical Commission’s (NMC) 10-year accreditation granted in September 2023.

UDF has alleged that the NMC has “systematically dismantled” safeguards in medical education.

It said underqualified faculty are being allowed to teach MBBS students.

Senior residency rules have been bypassed. Non-teaching hospitals have been converted into teaching hospitals without proper infrastructure.

“This is not just an academic issue — it’s a patient safety crisis,” UDF national president Dr. Lakshya Mittal said.

“The WFME recognition was awarded to India citing world-class standards. Now, those very standards are being openly violated. WFME must intervene before the damage becomes irreversible.”

The complaint highlights multiple breaches. MSc and PhD holders with no patient exposure are being appointed to teach clinical subjects. Diploma holders are made Assistant Professors.

Loopholes allow ghost faculty and non-compliant hospitals to pass as teaching institutions. There are no independent audits or penalties for violations.

UDF has urged WFME to take three urgent steps. First, review India’s accreditation.

Second, issue a global advisory to licensing bodies. Third, suspend or de-recognise Indian medical degrees until reforms are enforced.

The complaint has also been sent to the Cabinet Secretary of India and the World Medical Association.

WFME has confirmed receiving the complaint. It said the matter will be examined under its official review process.

WFME recognition is vital for Indian medical graduates. It allows them to sit for licensing exams like USMLE and PLAB.

It also opens doors to training in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Any suspension could hit thousands of young doctors planning careers abroad.
