VHP Leader Clarifies Misconceptions Around Environmental PIL in Himachal
Shimla, July 27 — Amid growing confusion and misinformation surrounding an environmental Public Interest Litigation (PIL) pending in the Himachal Pradesh High Court, VHP leader Vijayendra Pal Singh from Himri village — the principal petitioner — has stepped forward to clear the air.
In a statement issued to the media, Singh emphasized that contrary to some misleading reports and campaigns, the PIL does not seek a halt to road construction or other development projects.
Rather, the petition demands that such development works, especially road construction, be carried out with proper environmental safeguards.
“Development and environment must go hand-in-hand. If roads are the lifeline, then the environment is the life itself — essential for health, sustainability, and the future of human life,” Singh said.
If the new alignment can save hundreds of trees, then people regardless of their political affiliations should support such efforts that will benefit all, he said
He pointed out that this year’s spate of natural disasters in Himachal Pradesh is largely a result of reckless development that ignored ecological balance.
He also condemned attempts by a few self-proclaimed "messiahs of development" who launched a signature campaign against him, branding him and his associates as "anti-development."
Singh alleged that these individuals have spread false narratives suggesting the petition aimed to stop all road work, thus inciting public resentment against the petitioners.
“It is unfortunate that a selfless effort to protect the environment is being twisted and targeted.
Opposition should be directed at wrongdoing, not at initiatives rooted in public welfare,” said Singh.
The VHP leader extended his full support to his co-petitioners, lauding their commitment to environmental protection and calling their move "commendable and timely."
