Shimla: An unusually prolonged dry spell since November has pushed large parts of Himachal Pradesh towards drought-like conditions, crippling farm activity and deepening the water crisis across the hill state. Adding to the concern, winter days have turned noticeably warmer, a new weather trend that has left residents and weather experts equally puzzled.

Farmers say agricultural operations have come to a virtual halt as fields remain parched and soil moisture continues to drop. The absence of rain and snowfall has hit both agriculture and horticulture, with orchards and winter crops showing early signs of stress.

Water scarcity is tightening its grip in several districts. Natural springs, streams and traditional kuhls are drying up, while many towns and villages are facing irregular water supply, heightening public anxiety as winter advances.

Meteorological data indicates that day temperatures are consistently hovering above normal for this time of the year, while nights remain cold but uneven. Experts point out that the combination of dry weather and warmer daytime temperatures is accelerating evaporation, worsening moisture loss from soil and water sources. This unusual pattern, they say, reflects a shifting winter trend that is becoming increasingly unpredictable.

Despite the clear warning signs, the Jal Shakti Department has come under criticism for its muted response, with farmers and residents alleging the lack of a visible contingency plan to deal with the unfolding situation.

Weather forecasts suggest little immediate relief, with dry conditions likely to persist in the coming days. Experts warn that if the dry spell and warmer winter days continue, Himachal Pradesh could face serious challenges to farming, horticulture and drinking water security in the weeks ahead.
