Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti Intensifies Campaign Against Drug Menace in Shimla
Shimla, March 18, 2025 — In response to the escalating drug problem in Shimla, the Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti's (HGVS) Shimla Urban Unit today submitted a memorandum to Shimla Mayor Surender Chauhan, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, advocating for comprehensive measures to combat substance abuse.
A delegation from HGVS, including State Secretary Satyawan Pundir and Shimla Urban Unit President Govind Chatrantha, Dharmendra Jhamta, Prakash Sharma and others met with Shimla's Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
They expressed deep concern over the rising instances of drug abuse among the city's youth and urged the municipal corporation to implement effective strategies to address this issue.
The Mayor assured the delegation that the matter would be prioritized in the upcoming municipal meeting, with plans to establish community-involved committees and organize awareness programs at the ward level.
Engagement with State Legislators
Earlier this month, HGVS expanded its advocacy by submitting memorandums to various Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) across Himachal Pradesh.
The organization called for a mission-mode approach to tackle the drug crisis, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and result-oriented anti-drug policy. They proposed the formation of a high-powered task force led by the Chief Minister, dedicated coordination cells, expanded de-addiction services, and targeted awareness campaigns involving community stakeholders.
Community Mobilization Efforts
HGVS has been proactive in mobilizing community support to combat drug abuse. They have organized protests and awareness rallies, encouraging citizens, welfare societies, pensioners’ associations, and social organizations to unite against the drug menace. A notable event was the protest held on March 8 near the Deputy Commissioner's office in Shimla, where residents gathered to demonstrate their collective resolve against substance abuse.
Future Initiatives
Looking ahead, HGVS plans to intensify its anti-drug campaign by focusing on the role of mothers in preventing drug abuse, aligning with International Women's Day initiatives.
They aim to launch targeted programs to educate and empower mothers to identify early signs of substance abuse and take preventive actions.
The Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti's concerted efforts highlight the urgency of addressing the drug menace in Shimla and the broader Himachal Pradesh region.
Through strategic advocacy, community engagement, and collaboration with governmental bodies, HGVS is striving to implement effective solutions to safeguard the well-being of its citizens.
