Political Drama Unfolds in Himachal: Opposition Stages Walkout on First Day of Humanity Day Session.
Shimla – The first day of the much-anticipated month-long "Humanity Day" session of 2019 was marred by political theatrics as the Opposition, led by Leader of Opposition Jairam Thakur, staged a dramatic walkout.
The protest unfolded after the Speaker refused to allow a debate on the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, a topic that has become a flashpoint between the ruling party and the opposition.
In a recalcitrant move, the Opposition members, spearheaded by Thakur, stormed out of the Assembly, accusing the government of ducking accountability.
"The government is avoiding a real discussion on the floor of the house, especially when the state's law and order is crumbling by the day,"
Thakur said in a fiery press conference post-walkout. He pointed to a surge in violence, including murders and other heinous crimes, as evidence of the government's failure to maintain order.
The session, intended to address pressing issues faced by the people, instead descended into chaos as the Opposition slammed the administration for what they see as a deliberate attempt to silence their voices.
Thakur didn't mince words, suggesting that the government was more interested in saving face than tackling the serious threats to public safety and well-being.
Adding fuel to the fire, Congress Mahila Morch, led a separate protest against the BJP, accusing them of hypocrisy and neglect.
Congress Mahila Morcha charged MLA and former Deputy Speaker Hans Raj threatened woman complainant using abusive obsence language and later tried to intimidate her.
This opening day drama sets the tone for what is expected to be a contentious and turbulent session, with both sides digging in their heels in a classic display of one-upmanship.
The real question now is whether any substantial progress will be made, or if the session will continue to be overshadowed by political posturing.
