SHIMLA-In a state-level function on World Environment Day, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today announced the government's commitment to develop a policy within a year to discover alternatives to plastic. The aim is to encourage industries to adopt sustainable alternatives and eventually impose a complete ban on plastic usage in the state.
Highlighting the need for innovative solutions, the Chief Minister suggested the utilization of plastic in road construction. He also emphasized the importance of incorporating environmental subjects into the school curriculum to promote awareness among children.
He also launched the rally on the world environment day.
The State Government is actively seeking alternatives to protect and preserve the environment, the Chief Minister stated, urging the public to support these efforts.
He emphasized the impacts of climate change, including shifting weather patterns and increasing water scarcity, which have led to other states seeking additional water from Himachal Pradesh.
The Chief Minister highlighted the state's first green budget, which prioritizes renewable energy initiatives and addresses the issue of single-use plastic.
He announced plans to replace government vehicles with electric ones over the next three years. Additionally, the state is promoting the production of solar and wind energy.
To further support eco-friendly transportation, the government is offering a 50% subsidy on the purchase of electric buses, trucks, and taxis. This initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and boost the income of individuals involved in the transportation sector.
Himachal Pradesh is leading the way in establishing green corridors, becoming the first state in the country to do so. The government is also focusing on the production of green hydrogen, with positive outcomes expected in the near future. The Chief Minister set a target to transform Himachal Pradesh into a Green Energy State by March 31, 2026.
The Chief Minister urged the Central Government to increase the state's share in hydro power projects, highlighting Himachal Pradesh's commitment to sustainable energy initiatives.
In support of environmental conservation, the Chief Minister distributed Dona-Pattal machines to women self-help groups and provided solar lights to single women, promoting sustainable practices. He was also presented with a jacket made from recycled plastic waste as a symbol of environmental awareness.
During the event, an exhibition featuring various self-help groups and organizations was inaugurated. Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena highlighted the state government's comprehensive environmental conservation program, focusing on waste management and the search for plastic alternatives.
Mohd. Al Khawad, Cluster Head of GiZ, emphasized the significance of climate change in the Himalayan region and the organization's projects dedicated to forest and wetland management, water security, and water management.
United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Dia Mirza drew attention to the harmful effects of plastic waste and its presence in the human bloodstream through the consumption of food.
She called for collective responsibility and urged collaboration between the government and industries to combat this menace.
