Dam Safety Expert DK Sharma, President, International Commission on Large Dams Safety

SHIMLA, NOVEMBER 14: Greatness can rise from the  remote unknown corners.

And few  success  stories prove this better than that of Devendra Kumar Sharma, who has journeyed from a small, nondescript village in Bilaspur to become one of the world’s most respected professional in dam safety.

Sharma, born in Mehrin Kathla (Khasri) — a village with no spotlight, no privilege, and no engineering legacy — grew up with little more than determination and a hunger to learn.

Today, he stands at the pinnacle of global recognition, honoured with the ‘National Honour for Global Leadership in Dam Safety’.

The award was presented at the third Indian Near Surface Geophysics Conference held in New Delhi on November 13.

The event was organised by the Aqua Foundation Academy and the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.

Experts from India and abroad attended, sharing groundbreaking work in near-surface geophysics, a field now indispensable for hydropower, dam management, archaeology, mining, groundwater science and military applications.

During the award ceremony, Sharma was the centre of attention.

Humbled, he said, “This award is not just mine. It belongs to my family and to every colleague who walked with me through this long journey. Whatever I have achieved comes from teamwork, discipline, and the values I carried from my village.”

Sharma shares his  44-Year Climb to Excellence with the Himbumail.com.

Every step reflects dedication, technical mastery, and calm leadership.

As Chairman of the Bhakra Beas Management Board, he handled assets of national importance — iconic dams, six powerhouses with 2919 MW capacity, and a 3705-km transmission network.

He earlier served as Managing Director of Himachal Power Corporation Ltd., and later as Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission, where he shaped key energy policies.

A Story Young Engineers Must Hear

In a state like Himachal, where hydropower is the backbone of development and green energy, Sharma’s rise offers an extraordinary message:

You don’t need a big city background to make a global impact.

You need discipline, consistency, and the courage to dream beyond your surroundings.

From an unknown Himachali village to international acclaim, his story now inspires a generation of engineers — especially those who believe humble beginnings limit great futures.
