SHIMLA: The mysterious death of a senior finance official of the Shimla Municipal Corporation has sent shockwaves through bureaucratic and civic circles, raising troubling questions over what transpired in the few hours between his return from office and his death at home.

Rameshwar Sharma, posted as Deputy Controller (Finance) in the Municipal Corporation, allegedly died by suicide under suspicious circumstances on Saturday.

However, the circumstances leading to his death remain shrouded in mystery, with police yet to ascertain whether any suicide note was left behind.

According to preliminary information, Sharma had gone to office in the morning as usual. But in an unusual turn of events, he reportedly took half-day leave and returned home. A few hours later, family members found him unconscious inside a room under mysterious circumstances.

His wife reportedly knocked repeatedly before discovering him unconscious. The family immediately alerted emergency services and rushed him to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

Police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to unnatural death proceedings and have begun investigations. Officials said the exact cause of death would become clear only after the post-mortem report arrives.

The incident has left family members devastated. Sharma’s mother is said to be inconsolable, while relatives remain unable to comprehend what may have driven the apparently soft-spoken and honest officer to take such a drastic step.

Sharma hailed from Ratnari village in Rohru subdivision of Shimla district and was regarded by colleagues as a diligent and upright officer.

His sudden death, especially after attending office earlier in the day, has fuelled widespread speculation and concern within the corporation and government circles.

Police are yet to record detailed statements of his wife, relatives and office colleagues.

Investigators are also trying to ascertain why Sharma abruptly left office midway through the day and whether he was under any form of stress or pressure.

The Shimla Municipal Corporation has so far not issued any official statement on the incident.

The tragedy has also revived memories of another sensational case involving senior Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation official Vimal Negi, whose disappearance and subsequent death had triggered allegations of mental harassment and institutional pressure.

Negi had reportedly left office in March 2025 and later went missing before his body was recovered from Bhakra Dam days later. The matter was eventually handed over to the CBI following intervention by the High Court, though investigations are still continuing.

The back-to-back deaths of government officials under mysterious circumstances have once again raised uncomfortable questions about workplace stress, accountability and the silent pressures operating within government institutions.

As investigators await forensic and post-mortem findings in Sharma’s case, the unanswered question continues to haunt both his grieving family and the bureaucracy: what exactly happened after the officer walked out of his office on half-day leave?
