Snow in Baralacha pass in Lahaul-Spiti

Shimla, Dec 18: After a long dry spell, the high mountain passes of Himachal Pradesh finally received relief. Rohtang Pass and Kunzum Pass witnessed a sudden freak and light  spell of snowfall, refreshing the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The snowfall at higher reaches has raised hopes for water recharge and a better winter ahead.

However, the rest of the state told a different story.

Towns like Shimla, Kullu and Manali remained overcast, with a mild chill in the air. But no rain or snowfall was recorded in most mid and lower hill areas. In fact, several hill stations experienced one of the warmest winter days of the season, raising concerns over changing weather patterns.

While snow fell on the peaks, smoke rose from the valleys.

Large parts of Shimla district’s apple belt are witnessing forest fires. Dry leaves, grasslands and bushes have turned highly inflammable. Fires are spreading from lower slopes, many allegedly triggered by human negligence and mischief.

Adding to the crisis is the burning of apple twigs by farmers. Many still believe that burning pruned branches will bring rain or kill pests and fungal diseases. Experts warn this is a dangerous myth. The practice is polluting the air and worsening smog conditions across apple-growing regions.

A thick layer of smog and fog has enveloped the apple belt, affecting visibility and health. Farmers and residents are complaining of breathlessness and eye irritation. The lack of strict monitoring by pollution control authorities has only made matters worse.

This winter has exposed a harsh contrast.
Snow rejuvenates the high mountains. Smoke suffocates the lower hills.

Weather experts say such uneven patterns may continue unless strong western disturbances arrive. For now, Himachal is facing a double challenge — climate uncertainty above and environmental neglect below.
