After the December 4 Oting firing incident, an odd mob over 250 people attacked the company operating base of the Assam Rifles in Mon town and torched its office on Sunday evening and in a melee that followed one more local was killed in firing that took place in order to disperse the angry crowd, stated DGP Nagaland and Commissioner Nagaland in a report sent to the Home Ministry.

Nagaland government has imposed section 144  in Mon town as a precautionary measure to restore peace in the Mon district where the Oting firing incident, its backlash among tribals followed by the army-civilians clash took place on December 4 evening. A high-level team of officials was camping in Mon to ensure peace and maintain clam there, revealed the reports.

Home Minister Amit Shah said tweeting his statement in Rajya Sabha  saying that  army  in Mon had information  on movement of some militants and on the basis of that  army’s 21 para  commando unit had laid an ambush in the suspected  area and in the meantime one vehicle came in.

On suspicion that militants were on the move, they fired bullets in which out of eight persons in the vehicle, six were killed. Later they discovered that it was a case of mistaken identity. The villagers gheraod the unit and burnt two vehicles and firing took place in which one solider was also killed and some were injured.

In Nagaland, Deputy Chief Minister of Nagaland attended the mass funeral of the tribesmen killed in the December 4 Oting firing incident.

Nagaland government gave Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia relief to next of kin of the family of the victims and those injured, the government stated to local media there.  

Uneasy calm prevailed in Kohima and Kisama where the Hornbill festival is in full swing. However the tourists continue to airdash at Dimapur airport for festival.  

Meanwhile, the Nagaland government has constituted a six-member special investigation team (SIT) under the IG crime, which will work under the supervision of additional director general of police crimes and would submit its report in a month time, said the order issued by the state government.  

Nagaland police have resisted a  case under sections 302, 307,  34 IPC at Tizit  police station that has been now transferred to  Nagaland state crime police station.

The injured persons were airlifted to referral hospital at Dimapur where they are under treatment, stated the government.

Chief Minister Nagaland Neiphiu Rio has also condemned the unfortunate incident   saying that the high-level probe has been ordered and would give justice to the innocent people killed in the incident.

Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma has also condemned the Oting incident in Nagaland and demanded the repeal of the AFSPA.
