SHIMLA, June 5: On World Environment Day, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) of New Shimla and the Green New Shimla Society came together to send a strong message against any move to sell, allot, transfer or commercialize green belts, parks and open spaces in the township.

In a joint statement adopted unanimously after a meeting held on Thursday, residents reaffirmed their commitment to protecting New Shimla's ecological heritage and preserving its green character amid growing urbanization and environmental pressures.

The participants resolved to intensify efforts to improve cleanliness, strengthen waste management practices, protect existing parks and green areas, and convert suitable vacant spaces into green zones through tree plantation drives, landscaping and biodiversity enhancement initiatives.

Expressing concern over reports that proposals involving the sale and allotment of certain green and open patches of land in New Shimla are under consideration by HIMUDA, the residents said such spaces were consciously retained during the planning and development of the township to ensure ecological balance, proper ventilation, recreational facilities and a healthy living environment.

The associations noted that despite repeated representations opposing such proposals, the matter continues to remain under consideration. They warned that any attempt to alienate or commercialize these lands would undermine scientific urban planning, weaken environmental safeguards and adversely affect the quality of life of thousands of residents.

In a strongly worded resolution, the associations condemned any move by government agencies to alter the status of parks, green belts, open spaces and other lands reserved under the approved planning framework and Master Plan of New Shimla. They urged HIMUDA to immediately stop processing any proposal involving the sale, transfer, allotment or change of land use of such areas.

The residents also resolved to collectively oppose any action that threatens the environmental character, planned development and ecological sustainability of New Shimla. They announced that all legal, administrative and democratic options would be explored to safeguard these public assets and protect the larger public interest.

The meeting concluded with a pledge to undertake regular community-driven initiatives aimed at increasing green cover, promoting environmental awareness and ensuring a cleaner, healthier and environmentally resilient New Shimla for future generations.

The joint statement was signed by representatives of several Resident Welfare Associations across New Shimla, along with office-bearers of the Green New Shimla Society, and copies were forwarded to the Chief Executive Officer of HIMUDA, the Mayor and Commissioner of the Shimla Municipal Corporation, local councillors and the media.
