Shimla/Kullu, July 11: Heavy rainfall across Himachal Pradesh has caused rivers and streams to swell, prompting the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) to issue a public alert over the release of additional water from the Parbati-II Power Station dam in Kullu district.

NHPC said that due to the continuous rise in the Pulga Dam reservoir level and the likelihood of further heavy inflows, around 50 cumecs of additional water will be released through the dam's radial gates on Saturday. With this release, the total discharge into the Parbati River is expected to increase to around 225 cumecs, including the existing environmental flow.

The corporation warned that if inflows continue to rise because of ongoing rains, more water may have to be released, leading to a further increase in the Parbati River's water level.

NHPC has urged residents, tourists, workers and all visitors to stay away from the Parbati River and its banks until further notice. Hotels, guest houses, homestays, camps and taxi operators have also been asked to inform and caution tourists against venturing near the river.

As part of the safety measures, hooter sirens will be sounded, while public announcement vehicles will be deployed in nearby areas to warn people about the rising water levels.

The advisory comes as heavy monsoon rains continue to lash several parts of Himachal Pradesh, pushing rivers into spate and increasing the risk of flash floods.

Authorities have appealed to the public to cooperate with safety advisories and avoid unnecessary movement near rivers and streams.
