PM Modi in Manipur

PM Modi unveils ₹1,200 crore projects in Imphal, promises peace as Manipur limps back from ethnic strife. Peace, Progress and Prosperity is the mantra that holds future for youth of Mani.

Imphal, Sept 13 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated development projects worth over ₹1,200 crore in Manipur, a state still reeling from ethnic violence that forced thousands into relief camps and led to the collapse of the N. Biren Singh government.

Driving into Imphal by road due to bad weather, Modi said the new projects would boost ease of living, create jobs, and lay the foundation for a brighter future. Among them are the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, new police headquarters, IT SEZ building, Manipur Bhawans in Delhi and Kolkata, and four new Ima Markets.

The Prime Minister highlighted two “game-changing” initiatives: the Manipur Urban Roads Project with an investment of over ₹3,600 crore and the Manipur Infotech Development Project worth more than ₹500 crore.

He said these would strengthen connectivity, encourage startups, and infuse energy into the state’s economy.

“Manipur is the crown jewel adorning the crest of Mother India… we must continue to take Manipur forward on the path of sustained peace and development,” Modi said, adding that violence was an injustice to both ancestors and future generations.

Modi recalled Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose calling Manipur the “gateway to India’s independence” and paid tribute to local martyrs. He pointed to the government’s symbolic tribute by renaming Mount Harriet in the Andamans as Mount Manipur.

The PM also announced that 7,000 new houses have been approved for displaced families and said a ₹3,000 crore special package had been sanctioned for the state, including ₹500 crore specifically for relief and rehabilitation.

He inaugurated four new Ima Markets, underlining women’s role in the Manipuri economy, and promised that the new Civil Secretariat would strengthen citizen-centric governance.

Modi further said that GST reductions would make essentials, cement, clothes, and food services cheaper, boosting both households and tourism.

He also spoke of new sports infrastructure under Khelo India, a National Sports University, the Marjing Polo Complex with the world’s tallest polo statue, and an Olympian Park.

“Imphal is a city of possibilities… without Manipuri culture, Indian culture is incomplete, and without Manipuri athletes, Indian sports remain incomplete,” Modi said.

From Imphal, the PM also reached out across the border, extending congratulations to Sushila Karki on becoming Nepal’s first woman Prime Minister, calling it a “remarkable example of women empowerment.”

Even as he painted a picture of a new, rising Manipur, the fact remains that the state is still struggling to return to normal life after months of ethnic unrest, with displaced families waiting for lasting rehabilitation and trust between the hills and valley yet to be rebuilt.
