CHANDIGARH, JULY 1: The arrest of a serving IPS officer by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sent shockwaves through the country's policing establishment, exposing how corruption can penetrate even the higher echelons of the police force.

The CBI on Wednesday arrested a 2012-batch Haryana cadre IPS officer, currently on central deputation with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in Delhi, in a bribery case.

The arrest is being seen as a major embarrassment for the law enforcement system, as the officer is accused of allegedly exploiting his position and influence to seek illegal gratification.

The case points to an alleged nexus of influence-peddling within the system. According to the CBI, the officer allegedly claimed he could use his personal influence to secure relief for individuals facing investigation by the agency in a counterfeit drugs case registered in Puducherry.

The investigation stems from a case registered on June 8 against a Delhi Police Inspector and two private individuals. During the probe, investigators allegedly uncovered the IPS officer's involvement in demanding bribes in return for influencing the investigation.

The probe had already unearthed substantial evidence. Earlier, the CBI arrested the Delhi Police Inspector along with six private persons.

The agency recovered around ₹25 lakh as trap money and another ₹90 lakh besides seizing incriminating documents, indicating that the alleged corruption network extended beyond a few individuals.

Searches following the IPS officer's arrest have widened the investigation. The CBI carried out raids at multiple premises linked to the officer and seized digital devices, hard disks and important documents, which are now being examined for further evidence.

The arrest raises troubling questions about accountability within India's policing system. When senior officers entrusted with upholding the law are themselves accused of selling influence, it erodes public confidence in institutions meant to deliver justice. The case underscores the challenge of tackling corruption not only at the grassroots but also within the top ranks of the police hierarchy.

The CBI said the investigation is continuing and further arrests or revelations cannot be ruled out as forensic examination of the seized material progresses.
